The Science of Sleep -2.5 out of 4 stars
I got a chance to see this movie directed by Michel Gondry and starring Gabriel Garcia Bernal, and I think I was actually a little disappointed. I guess following the masterpiece of Gondry's last film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, anything else Gondry would have tried to do afterwards would pale in comparison. Yet still, the movie felt disjointed and I agree with Roger Ebert's statement that "Gondry thinks his characters (in the movie) are much cuter than they actually are". I mean, there were some pretty cool concepts in the Science of Sleep, such as the 1 second time machine, and alot of the animation regarding the stuffed birds and whatnot were rather cool. I don't know. I guess I haven't been impressed too much with Bernal's performances ever since his genius one in Y Tu Mama Tambien. I felt his performance was too preachy in the Motorcycle Diaries, and I didn't get into his character in Almodovar's bad Education. Hmm...does this make me some kind of a film snob? Oh well. I tell it like I see it.
